How to Cook a Ham

There is nothing like a home cooked meal… prepared with love, rich aromas filling the house tantalizing the senses. One of the most popular dishes to prepare is baked ham. There are, quite literally, dozens of ham recipes available to suit just about any taste craving you may have from honey baked to glazed. However, regardless of what kind of ham craving you have, the steps on how to cook a ham are fairly common across the board. First, though, you need to purchase your ham — there are many options to choose from here including bone in to give additional flavor or boneless for ease in carving, from hickory smoked, to honey or sugar cured — you are bound to find a ham perfect for your needs.

Too, cooking the various types of ham is also very similar from one to the next. The only exception is with bone-in hams which will generally require additional time in the oven because of the bone. Typically, you want to cook your ham in a 350 degree oven and, depending on if you are baking a half or whole ham, you will cook for between 15-20 minutes and 30-45 minutes, respectively. Keep a meat thermometer on hand and check the temperature for doneness (internal temperatures of 160 degrees should be sufficient) before removing ham from oven. Once your ham has finished cooking, it is often easiest to serve it sliced. Enjoy!
